Double the Joy, Double the Care

Heather and Karl had a quiet suspicion — there might be two. Still, nothing prepared them for the moment they saw it on the ultrasound, confirming what they had only imagined — they were having twins.

Seeing two tiny heartbeats…holy cow. This is happening,” Heather recalled.

In that instant, their world shifted. Excitement blended with a touch of nervousness as they imagined the life ahead — double the laughter, double the milestones, and twice the joy. Every heartbeat on the screen was a reminder of the incredible journey unfolding, one made even more reassuring with the guidance of a trusted care team.

During Heather’s pregnancy, Quincy Medical Group (QMG) OB/GYN Katy Wand, MD, provided her care. Although Dr. Wand was on leave for part of the pregnancy, she returned seamlessly, picking up right where she left off.

When she returned from leave, she was completely up to speed — it felt like she hadn’t missed a single appointment,” Heather said. She was outstanding, amazing, and made sure she was there before the last few weeks of my pregnancy. She knew every detail of our situation, including my gestational diabetes and one of the girls’ growth restriction. She let me be in the driver’s seat with decisions like having a cesarean and really listened to my thoughts and concerns — she was fantastic.”

With that same sense of trust and reassurance, Heather and Karl approached the next chapter — finding pediatric care for their daughters, Madelyn and Abigail. Knowing they wanted a team they could rely on as confidently as they had during the pregnancy, they chose Lindsay Brink, DO, pediatrician at QMG. She was recommended by a couple of people we know, and since I already utilize Quincy Medical Group for my own care, it just made sense to keep everything within the same umbrella,” Heather said.

Life as first-time parents brought plenty of questions and new experiences, but Heather quickly recognized the pediatrics team’s dedication. We’ve had some great experiences. We’ve had to be in several times with the girls, but you can tell that everyone really cares and wants to help and resolve any issues. Both my husband and I have felt like we’re in good hands and that we’re listened to and cared for,” she shared.

Heather values having a pediatrician she can turn to, no matter the question. Dr. Brink and her nursing team are fantastic. I’ve called in with questions that I thought might be stupid, but they make me feel like it’s not a stupid question. They help guide us and clarify things. We’ve definitely felt very cared for along the way, and it’s made us both feel comfortable as we were learning and adapting to becoming parents.”

The convenience of the QMG Pediatric Walk-In Clinic has been especially helpful, particularly during a challenging winter. We’ve used the walk-in several times, especially once the girls started daycare. They’ve had ear infections, croup, influenza A — it was a lot. We’ve seen several different providers, and everyone has been fantastic,” Heather said.

With twins, illness often strikes in pairs: A lot of times I would take them both in, and one would have a fever, but not the ear infection yet. A couple days later, the other would get it too. Now they have tubes, so knock on wood, it’s going well.”

Heather recalls a particularly frightening moment when one of her daughters developed croup. We showed up to daycare just as it started happening, and it was very scary. At the walk-in, someone came out to the waiting room to do a quick check, and Dr. Brink, who wasn’t even scheduled with patients that day, made time to see her. She made sure our daughter was on the right track — it really showed that we were cared for.”

Reflecting on her experience, Heather emphasizes the importance of having pediatric care that’s accessible and reliable.

With every provider there, you feel like one of the most important patients, even though there’s a waiting room full of kiddos. That’s really important, especially when you have a sick child. You want to feel like someone is working to figure out what’s wrong. Quincy Medical Group is a really good choice,” she said.
