For Advanced Practice Providers Week, we’re getting to know Laura Garrett, APRN, FNP‑C, with our Quincy Medical Group Mt. Sterling Clinic. She shares what brought her to healthcare, what she enjoys about being a nurse practitioner and what she likes to do when she’s not at work.
Laura’s interest in healthcare stems from a desire to help people and build strong connections. “I chose to pursue a career in healthcare because I had a strong passion to help people and make a meaningful difference in their life.”
Her experiences with family and friends also played a role in her decision to pursue healthcare. “I saw a lot of supportive healthcare workers over the years with family and friends receiving care, and I wanted to provide that same comfort and support to patients,” she said.
Laura enjoys that healthcare is always evolving and gives her opportunities to keep learning. “The medical field is constantly changing, offering lots of opportunities to learn new things and stay up to date on current best practice,” she said.
In her work as a nurse practitioner, that means caring for patients of all ages, from newborns to those over 100, with needs ranging from preventive care to acute and chronic conditions. “I love that every day of work is different,” she said. “I enjoy giving individualized patient care and improving patient outcomes. I enjoy educating patients and giving them autonomy to make decisions about their health.”
Outside of the clinic, Laura’s time is largely centered around her family. She’s a mom to four kids, with boys ages 8 and 9 and twin girls who are 5. She enjoys going to their activities, along with traveling, working out, spending time with friends and family, listening to music and playing word games.
When it comes to wellness, Laura offers this advice: “Get plenty of sleep, stay physically active, drink plenty of water, eat a balanced diet. Visit your provider regularly for routine health screenings and preventative care.”
