Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a specialized microscopically controlled technique utilized to treat the most common forms of skin cancers. It allows skin cancer to be removed with less damage to the healthy surrounding skin while also minimizing the chance of any recurrence.
At Quincy Medical Group (QMG), our Mohs team includes fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, Sumul Gandhi, MD, FACMS, FAAD, as well as a staff that specializes in treating patients with skin cancer.
Dr. Gandhi shared, “Mohs surgery is used to treat certain kinds of skin cancers – most commonly basal and squamous cell carcinomas – with higher cure rates while preserving as much of the healthy skin around it as possible.”
The procedure is outpatient allowing patients to go home the same day. Dr. Gandhi removes the cancer one layer of skin at a time and processes the tissue in real-time until all the cancer has been confirmed to be removed by microscopic examination. After the cancer is removed, the wound area is often sutured or reconstructed. The whole process is performed under local anesthetic.
Not only is the surgery efficient for the patient, but the treatment is also one of the most effective forms of treatment for certain types of skin cancer.
”Cure rates are as high as 99% for some forms of skin cancer while removing the smallest amount of tissue necessary in order to obtain tumor clearance,” Dr. Gandhi said.
